HOLIDAY HEALTH ADVICE If you are planning a holiday abroad, please remember to check the health requirements of your destination. Consult the practice nurse Joanne Varga well in advance. Eat & drink sensibly while abroad. Make sure food is cooked properly. Always drink bottled water. Ask the pharmacist for re-hydration remedies and anti-diarrhoea tablets. Flat coke (not diet) is a good remedy for oral re-hydration. Try to avoid insect bites by using an insect repellent. Take an antihistamine to treat bites or prickly heat. EG Piriton. Vaccinations are required when travelling to certain countries as a necessary precaution. Visit the practice nurse at least 1 month prior to travelling for details of immunisation requirements. The most common are Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, Typhoid and Polio. Never under estimate how ill you can feel due to prolonged exposure to the sun. Be extra careful when protecting children. Over exposure can cause severe sun burn leading to premature ageing & skin cancer. Always use a high strength sun block. Casual sex whether on holiday or at home is dangerous. Protect yourself - use a condom. Receive condoms free form your practice nurse or health care assistant. Book an appointment. Don't come back with something more than you bargained for.
